Thanks for the article. I found it particularly noteworthy, since I had the dubious distinction of trying to work through the micro-manager from hell that just happened to be married to the Board President. As you pointed out in the piece, "It's the number one reason cited by on-site managers, when they want to leave their current position". To Illustrate that I'm not exaggerating, the subject association has gone thought 5 managers and 4 administrative assistants in less than a year.

Wow, what a great article! I have attended some seminars in other venues not related to "The Secret" and basically, "If it is to be, it is up to me..." is the theme. I have used this secret for years. I have a small management company and pretty much love what I do. I do know that I have the best Board members and mostly Associations (unless it is 8 pm on Friday, watching a movie and the pipe decides to flood)! Even when the pipe goes and I rely on my trusty vendors, then reinforcing that I also have the best vendors who are there for me when I need them! And when I sneak back into the theater, teary-eyed because I just interrupted the plumber's dinner to stop the flood and he said, "no problem, its for you Bonnie", then I have to thank the fact that I have such a great husband who says everything is OK and strokes my head... The way that you presented this (The Secret) was well said, with humor and you have a way of writing that is easy to read and identify with. Thanks for reminding me during this Holiday Season!

YOU ROCK!!!I just finished reading your article on The Secret. The Secret has been a part of our staff development for about a year now with great results. We sit together and watch the movie about once a year and the book is front and center on our bookshelf. The first time we introduced it to the staff; you could just see the light bulbs turn on in their heads. We see a dramatic difference in all aspects of our business when we apply the principle of ‘like attracts like’. It changes our attitude and everything we do in and out of this business.

I have scoured the internet looking for articles relevant to running a management company. It seems many of the industry organizations are reluctant to tackle or elaborate on management company issues. Some of the articles you address have a lot of concerns and problems many companies have but do not vocalize them like they were taboo. Also a lot of the trade organizations that most companies belong to do not deliver anything to management companies or very little. It seems to only benefit vendors who use these organizations network with management companies. Anyway I just wanted to let you know I found your articles informative and should be something trade organizations need to deliver to the firms that pay into them. 12/04/06

RE: October 2006 New Blood: Where Will it Come From?

Each month when I read your publication, I think to email you and advise how relevant and on-target your articles appear. This month I decided that it would be more than a thought. “Just do it,” as Nancy Regan said.

The October issue, New Blood: Where Will it Come From? is excellent and identifies the increasing shortfall of qualified professionals in the industry. There is a far wider gap than even I imagined. When I first entered the CA field in 1999, after many years in city management, I had the initial impression that it was populated by many former real estate property managers without specific training or higher education. Indeed, as you point out in your other October article, Why Managers Leave?, a college degree is not the only requisite that enhances someone’s credential, although I have always been a proponent that it is a good indicator that one can persevere to completion of a goal.

But then, over the next year, I met many highly qualified professionals, especially in my CAI and PCAM courses, individuals like Rob Felix who taught one of my classes and other students in the class. Since that time, I have come to appreciate that one of the deterrents to people entering the field, at least in the larger LSM industry, is in fact the pay scale which is seldom in line with associated industries, i.e. city managers.

I can’t speak to the portfolio issues (October issue) with the understanding and knowledge that you possess. But if an MC CEO believes that because a large scale GM can manage 4,200 units, he can assign a portfolio manager 4,200 units in FIFTEEN separate CA’s, then I can fully understand how and why the incumbent would come crashing down eventually.

Anyway, please know, Julie, that I appreciate your thought-provoking articles and enjoy the ManagerNewsline.

September 06 The 20% Solution

Hey Julie! Since I'm such a fan of Vinny Pareto (that's what we call him here in Mayberry), I have to tell you, this one was is one of your best ever. If people will listen to you, their life will be so much easier, and prosperous! Seems Rolf Crocker and I were just having this conversation last week. I can only guess how tough it is to write and edit these pieces, especially this one. I've lived by this rule for all of my adult life, taught it to my kids, employees and anyone that will listen. I'm sending the copy around to my entire sales team and make it mandatory reading.
Always a home run gang, but this one is out of the park!
