Vol. 05 No. 05 Warts and All

By Julie Adamen

As you may well imagine, last month’s articles regarding leaving your position were really the tip of the iceberg in terms of publishable material we received from those we asked to contribute. This month we are continuing on that theme, from “Give Notice and Get Tossed” to “Does It Go Smoothly?” and varying opinions on how much “notice” is enough. Much time and thought was placed in to answering our queries and the opinions deserve their 15 minutes of fame. If you have thoughts you would like to share, please do so to our email address.

Another topic that arose within the scope of leaving your position was the industry practice of giving the newest managers the worst accounts (as the veterans breathe a sigh of relief in getting rid of their “problem children”). Though maybe that practice isn’t as wide spread as it used to be, it still happens.

You know, it’s funny, but often I am asked how I keep coming up with topics to write about. For me, our industry is a gold mine of items about which to write - in other words, there are so many topics, and each with a different spin, I wouldn’t have time to write about them all AND run a business! But I do try to address those issues. Some upcoming topics will have to do with how we train our people, the home office for manager revisited, and the “10 Things Boards do to Mess Up Their Associations” (my personal favorite).

Just the other day, I had a manager email me that I was the “Queen of Reality.”  And it’s only because I have inadvertently taken on the role of industry gadfly, poking at our “soft underbellies” – talking about our industry, warts and all. “The Queen of Reality.” That’s about the best thing anyone could have said.
